Costa Cruises recently presented a preview of its new flagship, the Costa Smeralda. The virtual reality presentation was an exciting introduction to the vessel, which is currently under construction in Turku, Finland.
The ship, which is being designed to provide an authentic tribute to Italy, makes its debut appearance on 20 October 2019. At that time, the flagship will set sail on a 15-day journey from Hamburg to Savona. Upon its arrival in Savona on 3 November 2019, commemorations for naming the ship will commence.
The Costa Smeralda will be unique as it is the first global cruise ship to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). LNG is the cleanest of the fossil fuels worldwide.

The ship’s tribute to Italy begins during its naming ceremony. At that time, the Italian tribute will begin with the ship’s official name and proceed by reviewing the names of the public areas and decks on the ship, each of which is associated with a famous Italian square or place.
For example, Deck 20 will be named Trieste while Deck 4 will be called Palermo. Therefore, by sailing on the Costa Smeralda, cruise-goers can become well familiarized with Italy and its place names and locales.
Many of the spots on board will underscore the fun and flavor of the country as well. In fact, the central area of the new ship will be called Colosseo, an appropriate name considering that the heart of the vessel will feature three levels that showcase entertainment offerings. Bright screens appearing on the ship’s dome will tell a variety of stories at each port of call from early morning to night.
The square will be a welcome gathering place as well as it will be home to Italian-themed lounges. Patrons can sit back and relax as they sip on sparkling drinks while admiring the ocean through sea-friendly glass.
Passengers can also enjoy the Piazza di Spagna, a stairway of massive proportions featuring three decks or relax in the piazza Trastevere, where they can relax in bars such as the II Barcaro. Guests can also stroll along the Passeggiata Volare, where they can experience the ship at its highest point.
