Carnival Corporation recently opened the new Amber Cove cruise port, located on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic. The port has been opened to provide cruise ship guests with an introduction to the Puerto Plata region of the Dominican Republic. Also known as the Amber Coast, this section of the island is known for its friendly people, beautiful shorelines, lush forests, rivers, and cascades. The port is re-opening and welcomes regular visits from cruises ships for the first time in three decades.
The Amber Cove cruise port is set in a cove that is home to a mountainous terrain and a green tropical landscape. Known for its historical Colonial and Victorian architecture, the centralized location plays host to markets that feature Dominican souvenirs and crafts, as well as a wide array of eating establishments. Northern coastal specialty dishes are offered, as well as brews featuring locally grown coffee. Patrons at the Sky Bar on the island can sit atop a sixty-foot incline where they can savor the food and drink and enjoy awe-inspiring views of the cove and port.
The port is also home to a swim-up bar, zip line, water slides, and splash pads for the kids. Guests, while visiting the island, can take a hiatus at one of the area’s cabana rentals, some of which are built on hills or over the sparkling water. Re-establishing cruise visits to the Puerto Plata region, which is approximately 100 miles away from another popular cruise ship stop, Samana Bay, will give passengers an additional opportunity to enjoy the unique attractions and sites that can only be found on Caribbean excursions.
The cove, which was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492, is home to amber mines, some of which are considered the richest on the globe. The site was also notably the film location of the movie, Jurassic Park. Visitors to the historic downtown area often stroll through the famous Malecon, an open-air boardwalk that spans three miles along the Atlantic. Fort San Felipe, one of the oldest forts in the region, is a popular site as are the museum tours that cover the region’s stores of amber.
One of the biggest marine adventure parks, Ocean World, provides guests with different ways to interact with various marine animals. Guests can also visit Paradise Island by speedboat, which is a top location for scuba diving and snorkeling. A visit to a coffee plantation should also be included on a visitor’s itinerary. Many attractions are waiting for cruise guests who journey to this part of the World.
