Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Vista has been recognized by Lloyd’s Register with the ECO Notation, a designation that is given to cruise ships that surpass current environmental and maritime regulations. Lloyd’s Register is a worldwide engineering, technical, and business services firm that is owned by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation, a charity in the UK that is devoted to science and engineering research and education.
The Carnival Vista’s green ship status is well-deserved as the vessel meets all current mandates for sulfur oxide and nitrous oxide emissions as well as particulate discharges. In addition, the ship features Carnival’s first Intelligent Power Management System. The organized design of the system maximizes the operational setting on the ship’s diesel engine to conserve fuel and lower emissions. In addition, the ship features a steam-turbine generator, used to recover the excess steam that is produced by the ship’s gas boilers.
Other innovative shipboard systems included on the Carnival Vista’s green ship design feature energy-efficient LED lights and an upgraded wastewater treatment process. The Carnival Vista design also surpasses the regulatory sanctions established as a part of the Hong Kong Convention for safe recycling. Therefore, the ship is deemed to be safe for future recycling.
Lloyd’s Register plans to conduct periodic audits and surveys of the Vista’s operating system to make sure the vessel is complying with the ECO rules so it can maintain its environmental notation.
